When thinking about cybersecurity, what comes to mind? Hacking? Malware? Suspicious emails? All those topics are valid, but there are also many other roles in the field of cybersecurity who help keep us safe from those threats.
Software development, sales, threat researching, HR, services and support, marketing, the executive suite – no matter your passion, there are many ways to apply your skills for a career in cybersecurity. For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, I’m interviewing a few people about their career paths and what keeps them passionate in the fight against cyber adversaries.
Shanan Winters: How did you start working in cybersecurity?
Kali Hernandez: Mostly by luck. I started working in Federal IT sales out of college for a very large OEM in my hometown. I really enjoyed the work, and through typical career progressions in federal sales with OEMs and channel partners, as well as leveraging connections through networking, I landed at Fidelis Cybersecurity. With the industry trends and the unlimited growth potential, I knew cybersecurity would be a great next step in my sales career. And it was the right move! I’m continuously learning new skills that help me adapt and solve for the challenges of tomorrow.
SW: What excites you about cybersecurity?
KH: Working in cybersecurity, I feel like I am part of a team that makes a real impact on improving our nation’s cyber defenses. I find this career path fulfilling both on a professional level (every day is different) as well as on a personal level as a military spouse. This industry can make a difference. In my current role, I really enjoy building relationships and collaborating with technology professionals to bring mission-critical solutions forward.
SW: What advice would you have for someone considering working in the field?
KH: I would say there is no downside. Working in cyber is fun—if you’re up for the challenge—and it can be extremely rewarding, both professionally and financially. The world, and cybercrime in general, can be scary at times. This industry is cutting edge, in high demand, and has many different opportunities for growth as career aspirations evolve over time.
SW: What do you love about working at Fidelis?
KH: The people! I have had the pleasure of working with some of the most intelligent, hard-working, fun, and mission-focused people since I joined this team. The family atmosphere was a big bonus I learned after coming onboard.
SW: What is something you want everyone to know about a cybersecurity career?
KH: It is always changing. New days bring new threats. No matter what path you choose in cyber – you will not be bored!
SW: What advice do you share with just about anyone when it comes to their cybersecurity?
KH: “Don’t click on it.”
