Cybersecurity Awareness Month Spotlight: Rami Mizrahi, Vice President, Engineering
When thinking about cybersecurity, what comes to mind for you? Viruses? Ransomware? Phishing? Us too, along with the new threats that emerge daily.
The cybersecurity world is one of many roles and responsibilities that come together to keep the digital world safer from cyber threats. Professionals in threat research, threat detection, incident response, and software development play pivotal roles in the development of cybersecurity solutions. And so does sales, HR, services and support, marketing, the executive suite, and more. In other words, no matter your passion, there are many ways you might see yourself in a cybersecurity career.
For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, I’m interviewing a few Fidelis Cybersecurity professionals about their chosen paths and what keeps them passionate in the fight against cyber adversaries.
Meet Rami Mizrahi, Vice President, Engineering
Shanan Winters: How or why did you start working in cybersecurity?
Rami Mizrahi: By accident – I joined a startup that did cybersecurity and fell in love with the field. We were looking at attacks that were happening, understanding the potential damage, and the ways attackers can operate, and it drove the interest. Looking at how attacks can be performed, from simple to complex, and then stopping the attacks before damage could be done made me realize that my career could give back, provide great value, and protect others.
SW: What excites you about cybersecurity?
RM: Lately, it’s exciting to see how the life of an attacker is getting easier and easier, and knowing that we’re rising to the challenge of keeping our customers safe. With so many turnkey, free tools on the internet, and pay-to-play “Malware-as-a-Service” and “Ransomware-as-a-Service,” cybersecurity moves faster by the day. The projects I’m most passionate about are the ones where we analyze how hackers get in, and we find new ways to enhance our products to prevent, detect, hunt, and neutralize them.
SW: What advice would you have for someone considering working in the field?
RM: Understand what happens under the hood when you browse a website. Know what happens when you go to a news site or social media. Use a packet sniffer or proxy on your PC to see what is happening on your own network through your day-to-day activities. You’ll start to see everything that’s happening under the covers – the movement of data; the connections between servers and devices. If you start there, you can learn how attacks happen and how to defend against them, etc. Also, follow cybersecurity blogs and technical journals. Understand the big attacks; see how they happened and learn how defenders break them into phases to identify and defend against different tactics.
SW: What do you love about working at Fidelis Cybersecurity?
RM: I love that I can work across the world from the company headquarters and feel like I’m an integral part of a team that’s solving global problems.
SW: What advice do you share with just about anyone when it comes to their personal cybersecurity?
RM: Don’t click on anything – ever. Period. Never. Just don’t.
