Careers in Cybersecurity: Moni Oloyede

Cybersecurity Awareness Month Spotlight: Moni Oloyede, Director of Corporate Marketing Infrastructure

When thinking about cybersecurity, what comes to mind for you? Viruses? Ransomware? Phishing? Us too, along with the new threats that emerge daily.

The cybersecurity world is one of many roles and responsibilities that come together to keep the digital world safer from cyber threats. Professionals in threat research, threat detection, incident response, and software development play pivotal roles in the development of cybersecurity solutions. And so does sales, HR, services and support, marketing, the executive suite, and more. In other words, no matter your passion, there are many ways you might see yourself in a cybersecurity career.

For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, I’m interviewing a few Fidelis Cybersecurity professionals about their chosen paths and what keeps them passionate in the fight against cyber adversaries.

Meet Moni Oloyede, Director of Corporate Marketing Infrastructure

Shanan Winters: How or why did you start working in cybersecurity?

My first job out of college back in 2007 was with a cybersecurity company called Sourcefire. I started out in the marketing department; it was a fun and exciting environment! That was right around the beginning of cloud computing and data being stored in the cloud. The landscape of cybersecurity changed very quickly, and it made the job challenging and interesting.

SW: What excites you about cybersecurity?

Moni Oloyede: It’s never dull or stagnate. Cybersecurity keeps you on your toes; there is always something to learn or alternative ways to solve a problem. Cybersecurity, in any space, attracts some of the most intelligent people you’ll ever meet.

SW: What advice would you have for someone considering working in the field?

MO: Always be curious, and never stop learning. Cybersecurity is not an industry for people who like the mundane. Cybersecurity is also a broad field, so find your niche like incident response, network security, cloud security, or endpoint security.

SW: What do you love about working at Fidelis Cybersecurity?

MO: The people who work at Fidelis Cybersecurity are very passionate about what they do and that becomes infectious. When you have people who are passionate and talented at what they do, you can solve almost any problem that arises.

SW: What is something you want everyone to know about a cybersecurity career?

MO: With any career is cybersecurity you have to be adaptable. You can’t be rigid in your thinking or approach. The more open to testing new ideas and working through problems you are, the more successful you’ll be.

SW: What advice do you share with just about anyone when it comes to their personal cybersecurity?

MO: At least have the basics covered. Practice good cybersecurity hygiene, like having good, strong passwords, knowing the characteristics of a phishing attack, and securing your mobile device and social media profiles.
